Meet Rob van Vuuren – live, unplugged and slightly unhinged
From his trailer-trash character Twakkie to his smooth moves on Strictly Come Dancing, Rob van Vuuren has set the South African entertainment scene alight – and now audiences can experience this funnyman’s comic flair at KBT.
This comedy dynamo is performing his acclaimed one-man show Rob van Vuuren is Rob van Vuuren. That’s right, folks – no footskating around the block: this time he’s playing himself. This is a show starring Rob van Vuuren, in a show about Rob van Vuuren, written and directed by – you guessed it – Rob van Vuuren.
Despite all that rah-rah fanfare, our Rob is actually quite a humble lad…
Fresh from his success at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, and in the run-up to his stint as co-host of SA’s Got Talent, Van Vuuren will be taking audiences on a side-splitting odyssey through the life and times of an over-talented actor, comedian and general circus animal.
“Often, actors get together for drinks and share war stories about what’s gone wrong on stage – things that the audience is never aware of,” explains Van Vuuren. “I realised I had an inordinate amount of these disaster stories – such as being stabbed on stage – and decided to chart my often sublimely ridiculous journey as an actor in an autobiographical stage show.”
During the show, he tears down the fourth wall while sharing these disarmingly honest and raucously witty tales that delve into the psyche of one of the country’s busiest entertainers (who could forget the record 13 productions he mounted in Grahamstown last year?).
Rob van Vuuren is Rob van Vuuren was nominated in the category of best one-man comedy show at the South African Comedy Awards, and won the Nando’s award for best comic performance by an actor at last year’s National Arts Festival.
Van Vuuren first came to the attention of South African audiences as the passive-aggressive Twakkie in The Most Amazing Show, which took the live performance circuit by storm and spawned a television show. He also co-hosted Crazy Games, before winning Strictly Come Dancing with partner Mary Martin last year.
Going from ballroom dancing to having a ball on the comedy stage, the man who has been variously described as “comic genius” as well as the more obsequious but nonetheless flattering “comedy god” will be providing rare insights into the unpredictable nature of live performance. His sage advice? “Leave your kak at the door and step with me into the world of the wonderful lie.”
The show is rated PG13 for language.
