Following the success of Shirley Valentine at the Kalk Bay Theatre last year, Bigleaf Productions returns this year with yet another Willy Russells classic– Educating Rita!
Rita is 36 and feels her life is passing her by. How can she, an undereducated hairdresser from working class Liverpool change the course that her life is already set upon? Education! To change herself from the inside she begins a degree through the Open University. It is here she meets Frank , her disillusioned cynical and alcoholic tutor. Inspired by her energy and vitality he fears he has nothing to teach her and paradoxically fears his teaching will not change her for the better. Through a year of tutorials both discover that nothing in life is inevitable as long as you give yourself the power and courage to choose. In Willy Russell’s typically optimistic style – Educating Rita is a funny and inspiring account of a woman’s determination to change her life.

Anthea Thompson – whose performance as Shirley Valentine garnered her yet another Fleur Du Cap nomination for best Actress – returns to play the role of Ravishing Rita. She is joined by acclaimed actor David Dennis – last seen by Cape Town audiences in Assassins – who plays Frank. It is a rare treat to see actors of this calibre share the stage.
Paul Griffiths directs with design by Cape Town City Opera’s resident designer Michael Mitchell.
