Cape Town theatre goers and music lovers are in for a feast at the Kalk Bay Theatre over the Christmas season.
Actress & musician, MICHÈLE MAXWELL, and actor, singer & choreographer, GRAHAM CLARKE bring you their unique interpretation of the exhilarating and evocative music of Jacques Brel in “HOOKED ON BREL”. With their lack of pretension, Brel’s songs go straight to the heart. Cutting across class and creed they touch on all aspects of life and that is his timeless appeal. This superbly creative Belgium artist burst onto the scene in the 1950’s, gathering millions of fans and since his death in 1978, his music continues to thrill and entertain millions.
Clarke has been performing Brel’s material ever since working with Taubie Kushlick, in 1980, in her legendary production of Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris . Maxwell, a new recruit to the Brel magic, brings fresh musical arrangements, infused with a jazz sensibility and 35 years of being a singer / pianist and creator of music theatre, both locally and abroad.
Both performers have acclaimed dramatic abilities. Graham has appeared in many feature films and in TV going way back to the very popular character, Nick Wilmot, in The Villagers. His musical theatre career spans over 40 years, from Godspel, A Chorus Line to A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. His one man show, The Devil and Billy Markham, was performed last year at the Kalk Bay Theatre. Michèle has also had distinctive TV roles in Isidingo (as the loveable, Bubbles) and Fishy Fashions. Theatre fans will remember the wealth of characters she’s portrayed for Pieter Toerin Productions, and for Guys and Dolls and Death of a Salesman at the Baxter Theatre.
In the hands of these two spirited and accomplished performers, the songs of Brel, with their exquisite sensitivity and passion, will be a delight to both Brel enthusiasts and first timers alike.
“HOOKED ON BREL” runs at the Kalk Bay Theatre, Wednesdays to Saturdays, from the 10 to 31 December, with a bumper New Year’s Eve celebration!
