DIE BURGER

TONEEL: Rumpsteak, Kalkbaai-teaterrestaurant
MARINA GRIEBENOW
26/10/2008 07:30:06 PM – (SA)

KBT’S NEW PRICES

add a comment

Substantial reductions in ticket prices come into effect on October 22, 2008 when the new Gaetan Schmid comedy, “RUMPSTEAK”, opens. Responding to patrons’ replies to a KBT email asking why people weren’t going to the theatre anymore [which reflected overwhelmingly that money, or more precisely the lack of money in the current economic climate is the main reason], KBT, the performer and the restaurant operators have together reduced prices and changed the way in which meals can be ordered to allow patrons to choose how much they wish to spend on food as opposed to being tied into a 3 course meal. These are not, repeat not, specials but a fundamental change in how KBT sreves and charges for food – it is the intention to retain this system for time to come. Patrons can find themselves spending up to 50% less on coming to the theatre and eating depending on how they choose to order food.
The simple choice between a 3 course meal [at anything from R210 to R250] and a show only ticket [at R100/R110] goes and is replaced by ~
1. a dinner/theatre ticket priced at ~
[a] the cost of the food that you choose to order off the menu; plus
[b] on Wednesdays & Thursdays – R75; and
[c] on Fridays and Saturdays – R90;
2. a menu which allows patrons to choose what they want to eat from various full and half portion meals ranging in price from R30 to R80 per dish. If they want to put together a 3 course meal, it is their choice to do so; if they want a light meal and coffee, again it is their choice; and
3. a show only ticket priced at [a] R80 on Wednesdays & Thursdays; and [b] R95 on Fridays & Saturdays.
Helen and Simon Cooper, co-owners of KBT, said today that “the financial squeeze means that people are now spending a lot less on luxuries [such as dining out and entertainment]. Not good for the theatre world. So we are trying to do something that will keep people coming through the door. By changing the way in which KBT offers food to its patrons and reducing ticket prices, we are able to offer a much less expensive night out while still allowing those who wish to do so, to put together a 3 course meal. There are a lot of people out there who have supported KBT hugely in the past and we hope that these new pricing structures will allow them to continue to do so.”
Linda & Laura, the sisters who operate the restaurant at KBT, said that “the food on offer will be as sumptuous as always and if you want it, you can put together a really delicious 3 course meal or a “smorgasbord” of smaller dishes to share but with the greater flexibility in what can be ordered, patrons have control over what they spend on food and can choose how much they want to spend. The system probably means that we will run a bit more during service but that’s fine as long as people enjoy their meals.”

G Schmid in Rumpsteak

A KBT CO-PRODUCTION

“RUMPSTEAK” with GAETAN SCHMID directed by ROB VAN VUUREN; Sound design by JAMES WEBB
English / All ages / 45 mins
SEPTEMBER 30 to OCTOBER 17, 2009 [Wednesdays to Saturdays] @ 20h30
Ticket Prices ~a show only ticket priced at [a] R85 on Wednesdays & Thursdays; and [b] R100 on Fridays & Saturdays.

In his inimitable style Belgian born comic Gaetan Schmid, who trained with Jacques Le Coq, dishes up a sizzling hot new show; a staggering behind-the-scenes look at a French restaurant. Fresh staging and explosive theatre are sure to satisfy. Bon appetit!
“RUMPSTEAK ” is a one-man show about the everyday drama in a typical French restaurant. Speaking only French, and confining his movements to one square metre, Schmid plays multiple characters. As if that isn’t challenging enough, he uses no props. Instead, over 800 sound clips populate his performance and aid his transitions from one character to another. Every imaginable restaurant sound, from the splicing of knives to the squealing of boiling lobsters, accompanies his spatially-limited performance.
Schmid says the show is like a good book in that it encourages the audience members to use their imaginations. “I give the audience hints and leave them to finish the picture. One person might imagine a character as having a beard, for example, it is a show that people are able to see differently,” he says.

“Schmid’s performance is a masterclass in split-second comic timing.” – Mail & Guardian
“… a performance which has you laughing from start to finish and sends you on your way with a satisfied smile.” – Cape Times
“ … a one man explosion … a combination of physical accuracy and absolute charm …” – Megan’s Head
“… an impressive panoply of 800 sound clips … wonderful …” – False Bay Echo
“This accomplishment is an athletic feat, as Schmid dances about within one square metre, switching characters at the drop of a spatula.” – Cape Argus

REVIEW OF “FROGS”

CAPE TIMES : OCTOBER 01, 2009

Sad , funny, inspirational
A small story with big issues
October 01, 2008 Edition 1
Kate Roux-Perdikis

FROGS. Directed by Ingrid Wylde, with Taryn Bennett. At Kalk Bay Theatre until October 18. Kate Roux-Perdikis reviews.

USING an unexpectedly playful comic approach to serious material, Frogs is a refreshing theatrical experience, rather than a depressing portrayal of the human condition.

The production follows the story of a lonely young woman, Sam, who is tormented by a traumatic incident in her past. Sam struggles to make a connection with the world and humanity, and starved of this connection, she retreats into a fantasy world.

As the play progresses, her demons grow, and each night as she sits at home, the sounds of frogs awake traumatic memories. They are her only companions and she creates fictional relationships to escape her sad reality.

When she begins to look inside herself, things take a turn for the better.

The story is unveiled through mime and there is very little dialogue. This accentuates the sense of silent suffering and total loneliness. The set is minimal, yet effective.

The minimalism leaves no distraction for the audience, leaving it to focus rather on emotions and the character’s situation at hand.

The production is small-scale, with a small actress in a small space, but it deals with big issues that most of us have felt at least once in our lives.

A talented physical theatre actress, Taryn Bennett is a joy to watch, as she never falters in her performance and maintains her energy and captivates the audience from beginning to end. She has a wonderful stage presence. Her Cleese-like humour provides laughs to break the serious tension.

Frogs expresses its issues through humour, making its content suitable for all ages.

Frogs is produced by Blue Sky Productions, A Conspiracy of Clowns and From the Hip: Khulumakahle.

This beautiful, inspirational tale of hope and perseverance also features Rob Murray.

With direction by Ingrid Wylde and additional story development by Mongi Mthombeni, this play is a definite must-see.

Tickets are R150, or R210 for a meal and show. To book, call 073 220 5430, or see www.kbt.co.za
