“In a small theatre, I discovered a small play about a small story performed by a small person. When I walked out, my life was a little bit better. The play was called Frogs and it starred a beautiful, talented performer named Taryn Bennett. Thank you, Ms Bennett.” (Zane Henry, July 8, 2008 Tonight)
“An outstanding performance. A sensational piece” (Cue 2007)
Acclaimed director Ingrid Wylde directs superb, physical performer Taryn Bennett in a mime piece on loneliness, isolation, loss and love. Written and conceived as a collaborative work by Taryn Bennett and Ingrid Wylde, the story revolves around a lonely mime coming to terms with a moment in her childhood past that haunts her. This talented young newcomer to the Cape Town stages will charm you and delight you, and might very well allow you to look at your life differently through a small story about the big capacity for affirmation of the human spirit.

At the Kalk Bay Theatre from the 17th to the 21st of September, Fleur de Cap winner, Godfrey Johnson brings to life the spirit of Noel Coward in the one-person cabaret, “FLIRTING WITH COWARD”. The genius wit of this writer and composer of the 20th century is brought to life by one of Cape Town’s most versatile and moving musical performers.
Noel Coward carried himself with style and sophistication in a time when the standards were higher. Witty and debonair, he was the centre of attention, charming his friends with his musical genius and satirical wit. He was the very image of the elegant gentleman in a smoking jacket with a cigarette holder. Join Godfrey Johnson to re-discover the spirit of this iconic performer, who can hold you in the palm of his hand with his illuminating wit and irresistible musical charm.
After having worked for many years as a musician, director, composer and having accompanied Pieter-Dirk Uys, Godfrey Johnson won the 2007 Fleur du Cap award for Best Performance in a Cabaret for his work in Kissed by Brel. He now brings his signature style of music to reinterpret the songs of one of the last century’s most satirical and visionary entertainers. Noel Coward, known for being the musical and witty host, comes alive between the notes, chords, and words sung by this Cape Town performer. Johnson will perform his own versions of such Coward classics as Mad Dogs and Englishmen, 20th Century Blues, Mad about the Boy, and If Love were All. More than a tribute, this show honours the spirit of Coward in the 21st century.
Johnson premieres “FLIRTING WITH COWARD” as his second collaboration with Bosnian born director, Sanjin Muftić. Muftić’s previous Yawazzi productions, Under the Stars, Above the Tree (showing at the Out the Box festival) and The Life and Work of Petrovic Petar have both received passionate critical acclaim.

After highly successful runs at the Hilton Arts Festival in KwaZulu-Natal, the Festival of Fame in Johannesburg and the National Arts Festival 2007 and 2008, “FROGS” debuts in Cape Town. Featuring the exceptionally talented Taryn Bennett under the direction of the innovative Ingrid Wylde, “FROGS” tells the story of one woman’s timid attempts to make connections with others in the hostile atmosphere of a bar. However the perpetual indifference she is confronted with, and the all-pervading memories of her past, compels her to retreat into a rich fantasy life, where she can escape from her growing loneliness and desperation.
Written and conceived as a collaborative work by Taryn Bennett and Ingrid Wylde, “FROGS” is a metaphor for where South Africa is at the present moment. This is a narration of identity, of recognising self and self in relation to others. It examines preconceptions of violence, gender, personhood, fear of the ‘other’, and shifting paradigms.
