MIRIAM BACKHOUSE IN CONCERT
add a commentSUNDAY APRIL 06 & 13 @ 20h30
2 exclusive concerts by an iconic heroine of the UK’s folk-revivalist movement who is this year’s featured artist at the Splashy Fen Music Festival. To quote the Splashy Fen website ~
“First heard in 1973 on a radio programme broadcast from England’s industrial hub of Sheffield, Miriam had within four years of dedicated, relentless touring become a draw-card of every major folk club and gathering across the land, including Edinburgh and the even more sought-after Cambridge Folk Festival. The reputation garnered from these appearances led to a recording contract and the release in 1977 of her debut album ‘Gypsy without a Road’, which quickly sold out and, having never been re-pressed, has ever since fetched as much as 200 pounds at record fairs in the UK.
Miriam experienced yet more pivotal events in 1977 – meeting and marrying South African multi-keyboard player John Erasmus and deciding to relocate to this country to start a family. While at that point the Miriam Backhouse likened to Joan Baez and ranked alongside Maddy Prior may have been ‘put on the shelf’, the new Mrs Miriam Erasmus soon immersed herself in a host of varied musical ventures with distinctly local flavours. These have ranged from training young voices alongside the late Eve Boswell and starring in stage productions to re-founding the Durban Folk Club and 20 years of gigging festivals, nightspots, fashion shows, charity events and schools with her husband as ‘Mim and John’, playing whatever genre of music was demanded by the occasion. Miriam acquired her ‘African Rose’ tag in the mid-nineties when she recorded an album by that name.”

More Children’s Theatre brings you a new offering, “SNAKE MAGIC”. After performing their successful tales of The Magic Water and The Magic Bird at theatres and schools in the Western Cape their latest musical play is based on an ancient African folk tale that is filled with themes of jealousy, romance, betrayal, forgiveness and magic.
Nokiwe, the heroine of the story is a gentle and kind girl whose jealous and cruel brother takes all she has and leaves her to struggle to survive on her own. Luckily she is saved by a brave prince who takes her to his kingdom and marries her. However, Nokiwe’s troubles are not over and once again her brother sets out to cause her trouble. She finds herself once again alone in the forests; it is here that she encounters a snake that she protects from an evil snake with murder on his mind. Nokiwe finds herself in the Snake Kingdom where she is healed and protected and finally finds the courage and strength to return to the land of men where she is happily reunited with her husband and all is forgiven.
Heather Mac (singer, songwriter, playwright) has put together a fabulous cast of actors. David Muller (playwright, storyteller, actor; Whale Nation, Wit, Cry the Beloved Country) will be narrating the tale, Mzi Kakana, who has also performed in many highly accredited plays (Hair, The Horn of Sorrow, Raka, Under African Skies) will be playing the brother and the prince, and Lindelwa Kisana (Diaries of my Womanhood, Sisters Carwash) will be taking the leading role of Nokiwe. The National Arts Council is funding the production.
“SNAKE MAGIC” tackles many different current issues that face children today, namely bullying, jealousy, gender conflict and animal rights. It is appropriate entertainment for children between the ages of 7 and up. Adults are sure to enjoy too!
Expect great songs, fantastic puppets, props and performances.

A few things are as timeless as the music of Ol’ Blue Eyes. Very few artists in the world have managed to upstage his legendary performances of songs like “Fly Me To The Moon”, “Come Fly With Me” and “New York, New York”. The magic of Sinatra was the fact that he perfected the image of the guy next door…. the friendly neighbor, the thoughtful cousin, the romantic, yet simple bachelor seeking for the girl of his dreams. His music was and is accessible for audiences of all ages and builds bridges between generations. Regardless of what your age is or what generation you are from, Frankie celebrates life and love and good wine and good friends in his unpretentious and nonchalant way.
“COME FLY WITH ME” is a celebration of the life and music of Sinatra by a thirty year old vocalist, a fifty year old bass player and a seventy year old pianist. Join Francois Lliam, Derek Hutton, Trish Bailey and Derek Hayden in this exciting production that celebrates of the Voice of the Century and one of the most popular performing artists in history.
