THEATRESPORTS : 14TH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS

In November this year Cape Town’s favourite improvisation company celebrates its 14th birthday. TheatreSports players have been entertaining audiences with their unique brand of improvised theatre games in various venues around the peninsula. For those who have somehow managed to miss this popular live entertainment, TheatreSports is improvised comedy where teams of actors compete against each other in a series of improvised games. Judges in the audience give scores and members of the audience give suggestions for the action. The results are hilarious, outrageous and totally original. Two quotes from the Kalk Bay Theatre Comment Line give you an idea of audience reaction ~

” Last night’s Theatresports was brilliant – humorously entertaining, and the teams’ inventiveness and improv skills were awesome. Can’t wait to return; bringing lots of people with me…”

“The cast of TheatreSports – well I haven’t laughed so hard in ages and ages – will be back again soon with reinforcements. ……… Love Love Love Loved the show can wait to see it again. Keep up the good work!”

This is a real coming of age story. At the end of 1993 Cape Town was introduced to the phenomenon of TheatreSports when the company first started performing at The Dock Road Theatre at the Waterfront. TheatreSports has seen many theatres come and go and it has survived to become Cape Town’s longest running live show. Theatresports is played twice a week. There are performances every Monday night at The Intimate Theatre in Orange Street and on Tuesday nights at The Kalk Bay Theatre.

This year Improvision, the company that presents TheatreSports, has decided to have a full week of Birthday celebrations, so from the 19th to 24th November there will be a TheatreSports performance EVERY single night. They will kick off the week with a regular Monday night performance at The Intimate, followed by a full week of performances at The Kalk Bay Theatre. It’s going to be a TheatreSports marathon and TheatreSports fans can even buy season tickets for two or more of the shows!
The performances themselves will introduce new formats, new games and new ideas. There might even be scenes ‘to be continued’ the next day. The shows at The Kalk Bay Theatre will start earlier, at 20h00, so they can go on longer! Pasta will be served from 19h00 so come early. School going TheatreSports fans can attend the Friday and Saturday night shows.

“OUT OF TIME” at the Kalk Bay Theatre
Posted on October 11th, 2007 by Jono
Written and performed by Louw Venter
Directed by Rob van Vuuren

Louw Venter excels in this poignant one-man show, currently running at the Kalk Bay Theatre. Out of Time is a succinct and sensitive retrospective look at a man’s life following his accidental death at a picnic. Starkly South African stories are combined with universal themes as the main protagonist, Lukas Nel, has a one-sided conversation with his son describing both their separate but shared histories.
As he advises his son and reflects on his past life and missed opportunities – the audience is reeled in and cast back out in what feels like a slightly manic ride that teeters on the brink of tragedy, but is peppered with moments of intense hilarity.
This is a thought provoking piece and is definitely worth seeing. Do yourself a favour and get down to the KBT, enjoy a meal and a bottle of wine and take in a show – it’s something completely different and really is great value for money.
Running concurrently in the Kalk Bay Theatre’s “Louw Venter Season” is another play called The Best Man’s Speech which, by all reports, is also excellent.
Out of Time is showing on the following dates in October: 18, 19, 26, 27 & 31 and in November on the 01, 09, 10 and 14th.
For more details, and to book tickets, visit the Kalk Bay Theatre website or give them a call on 073 220 5430.
